Grrr, i hate moving [Jan. 28th, 2008|08:59 am]
Well, alright. Seeing as how i've only ever posted one LJ, and i'm currently trapped here without a whole lot to do, i figgerd I'd drop a post for the 1 (?) person listening.
As stated above, i'm trapped in Oahu (yes its Hawaii, im still trapped, shut up). The great majority of my worldly possessions have been crated up and sent to the mainland, everyone i know on the island is out to sea, and I cant leave because im waiting for the people at Navy Federal to get their heads out of their collective behinds and solve my car problem (which, admittedly is mostly my fault, but come on, i need someone to be the target of my ire). So here i sit in a (mostly) empty apartment, on the 27th floor, over looking Pearl Harbor. And I am incredibly bored. So, since i still have my camera and my MacBook, i plan on going out and getting some tropical photos that I've been meaning to take since i got here last december. Of course that plan is hampered by the horrible cold that descended on my like the angry wrath of God the first day i was checked off the boat. And it lingers so, yes it do. So yeah, thats pretty much it. Have fun all, and I'll see ya when i see ya, i guess.

Hola,

Ahh rant space, always a good thing . . . well for me anyway, anyone who reads this unfortuanatly has to suffer through it. Well as my attempt for my first live journal entry I'm gonna post a quickie rant that i wrote up a while ago, didn't cover what i wanted to, but it did bring up some intersting points. Lets keep in mind people that offense is inner directed, i am not to be held responsible:

Alright, we’re talking stereotypes, what and how, and just possibly, why should I care? My good friends over at Merriam-Webster have this to say about stereotypes: 2 : something conforming to a fixed or general pattern; especially : a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment. Uncritical judgment, huh?
I recently read an article about the Frag Dolls, Ubisofts team of girl gamers, and the argument that seems to be on going about whether they are promoting a negative stereotype about girl gamers. Here is basically what I gathered the article said: Are the Frag Dolls real gamers: yes. Are the Frag Dolls girls: yes. Are the Frag Dolls hot girls: again yes. Now the author of the article, Bonnie Ruberg from Planet Gamecube, seemed to think that because the Frag Dolls are not unattractive this in some way diminished their goal of championing the cause of girl gamers anywhere by reinforcing a negative stereotype. Apparently she believes that the less than attractive girl gamers out there would be turned off by the fact that their potential role models are attractive. Hmm.
Now what is the whole point of a role model? Someone you look to for inspiration and would like to emulate, right? I fail to see the issue. Doesn’t everyone want to be attractive? When people complain about the highly exaggerated female form we find in video games, no one ever says anything about overly muscled, hyper-thyroidal male heros of games. How often have you seen a pimply, possibly overweight teenage boy hero of a video game? (which, I realize, is also a stereotype, bear with me, please).
So where do we draw the line between an Ideal and a stereotype? Shouldn’t our role models be at some point more than we are, or even more than we can possibly become? Isn’t it our responsibility to strive to become better at every opportunity? And is it not also the responsibility of every person to reach a level of maturity where that can realize that they can never be perfect, but to be proud of who they are and what they can accomplish? And no, before you ask, I am not saying that physical appearance is all-important, or even an end unto itself. Is everyone out there beautiful? No. Can everyone out there kick my butt at Halo? No (although, in my case, most could). As far as I know, there are only a handful of people in the world who fully understand the Theory of Relativity. We each have our own strengths, as well as our own weaknesses.
Listen, this argument about the perfect female ideal has raged for quite a while now. Women have been trying to fit an ideal since the inception of modern society, and the ideal has shifted with each generation. Anyone ever heard of Ruben? He was a painter, and he painted, at the time, what the ideal woman was. It might be beyond the scope of this editorial, but I just want to throw out there the idea that maybe, just maybe, we should take some time and address the cause and let the symptoms fix themselves.

-Goose, out.
